Torque Capability Comparison of Induction and Interior Permanent Magnet Machines for Traction Applications

This paper investigates the torque generating capabilities and performance comparison of induction machines (IM) interior-permanent magnet (IPM) for electric vehicle (EV) traction applications. Electromagnetic characteristics, such as torque, ripple, air-gap flux density, etc. are quantitatively compared by changing level loading. Other metrics saturation factor, power losses, efficiency, so on, well flux-weakening capability efficiency map have also been compared. For calculations electromagnetic 2D time-stepping finite element analysis (FEA) has employed. It revealed that due to reduction in components IPM machine a consequence demagnetization, it cannot generate toque high IM under overloading operating conditions. A thorough review literature on comparative studies electrical used EV or Hybrid (HEV) applications is included.
